The Path to Knowing is Obedience

Anyone who wants to do the will of God will know whether my teaching is from God or is merely my own.” (John 7:17, NLT)

The key to spiritual understanding isn’t intellect—it’s obedience. If someone wants scientific knowledge, curiosity and reasoning will guide him. But if he wants to grasp what Jesus Christ teaches, he can only do it by obeying. When spiritual truth feels unclear, it’s usually because there is something we refuse to do. Intellectual darkness comes from not knowing; spiritual darkness comes from not obeying.

No one receives a word from God without immediately being tested by it. We disobey and then wonder why our spiritual growth stalls. Jesus said, “If you come to the altar and remember that your brother has something against you, stop praying and go make it right first.” His teaching confronts us exactly where we live. We cannot pretend before Him—not even for a moment. He trains us down to the smallest detail. The Holy Spirit exposes our self‑justification and makes us aware of things we never noticed before.

When Jesus presses something on your heart, don’t avoid it. If you do, you’ll become a religious fraud. Pay attention to the things you casually shrug off—those are often the very reasons your spiritual life isn’t moving forward. Go first. Even if others think you’re being extreme, obey what God tells you.
