To Each one his Work
‘As a man sojourning in another country, having given authority to his servants, to each one his work, commanded the porter also to watch.’—MARK 13:34. WHAT I have said in a previous chapter of the failure of the Church to do her Master’s work, or even clearly to insist upon the duty of its being done by every member has often led me to ask the question, What must be done to arouse the Church to a right sense of her calling? This little book is an attempt to give the answer.

What is Pride?
Pride is a groundless thing. It standeth on the sands; or worse than that, it puts its foot on the billows which yield beneath its tread; or, worse still, it stands on bubbles, which soon must burst beneath its feet.

The Double-Minded Man
Some men seem to be born with two characters.

Sleep A Gift of God
Sleep is the gift of God; and not a man would close his eyes, did not God put his fingers on his eyelids—did not the Almighty send a soft and balmy influence over his frame which lulled his thoughts into quiescence, making him enter into that blissful state of rest which we call sleep.

The God of Our Salvation
IF salvation indeed comes from God, and is entirely His work, just as our creation was, it follows, as a matter of course, that our first and highest duty is to wait on Him to do that work as pleases Him. Waiting becomes then the only way to the experience of a full salvation, the only way, truly, to know God as the God of our salvation.

His Service is Freedom
HE has been good to me in all my needs, trials, struggles, and sorrows. Never could there be a better Master, for his service is freedom, his rule is love.

The Dual Meaning of Gift: Between Bribery and Atonement
It is a trite saying that “money commands all things.” This can only be accepted with many qualifications, but certainly anger is among the things over which it not unfrequently does exhibit its power.

Cultivating a Deeper Understanding of the Word to Enhance Our Teaching Skills
Therefore if, for your own and others’ profiting, you desire to be “filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,” remember that prayer is your best means of study.

The Hearing Ear and Seeing Eye
God give me now the spiritual power to “hear that (my) soul may live” and so to “behold the Lamb of God,” that when every eye shall see Him, and all that are in their graves shall hear His voice, I may behold the King in His beauty, and drink in His words of love!

The Significance of Ascension Beyond Resurrection in the New Testament
Let us arise with His resurrection and in fellowship with His glorious ascension learn henceforth to live above.

Aligning Natural Desires with Spiritual Treasures in Christianity
Christianity, be it remembered, proposes not to extinguish our natural desires, but to bring them under just control, and direct them to their true objects.

What is the Origin of Evil?
How is it that the Almighty God permitted it to enter into the world? This perplexing question is raised by many when they are hard pressed in their consciences and want a convenient corner in which to hide.

The Distinction Between the Righteous and the Ungodly in Their Temptations and Sins
“MEADOWS may be occasionally flooded, but the marshes are drowned by the tide at every return thereof.”

In how many ways hath Jesus manifested his love to thee?
He loved thee so as to die for thee. He loved thee so as to shed his blood for thee. He loved thee so as to wash thee from thy sins in his blood. He loveth thee now, so as to appear in the presence of God for thee.

The Beautiful Sacrifice of Waiting on the Lord for the Salvation of Sinners
The thought of being made instrumental in the hand of the Lord in calling sinners to Jesus, made holy Paul willing to wait in a sinful world, and put off his own happiness.

The Evening Sacrifice
LET me be mindful of Thy Name,
O Lord, in the night, And keep Thy law.

When first affliction comes upon us, how everything gives way!
PARADOXICAL though it be, only that man is at rest who attains it through conflict.

It means a good deal more than appears on the surface.
It was a stirring greeting which the Lord of Life spake to His first disciples on the morning of the resurrection.

Every true life is death-born
Every true life is death-born, and the deeper the dying the truer the living.

Death is but for a moment, Life is forevermore
Death is but for a moment. Life is forevermore.
