Beginning to Study the Word

As we begin the study of God’s Word, we must learn the significance of the Word’s presence throughout the universe.  In the beginning the Creator spoke everything into existence.  The Apostle John brings this to light in the first verses of his Gospel.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, ESV)

So, we begin to see the written Word describing the Living Word!

The Apostle Paul tells us that the invisible attributes of God can be perceived by observing creation.

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19–20, ESV)

In the Epistle to the Hebrews the Word is described first as an “it” that is living, active, sharp, piercing, and discerning.  Then in contrast the Word is described as a Him to Whom we must give an account.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12–13, ESV)

In the original language verse 12 begins with the words “logos Theos.”  Verse 13 ends with the word logos.”  A more literal expression would be that we are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him Whom to us is our Word.  The living Word.  The Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

The long way round to say that we must never lose sight of the Whom that we are studying!

May the Lord Himself bless you endeavors in the study of the Bible.
