In Christian Living
One of the great tragedies of the Christian life, however, occurs when, through apathy or neglect or overt attitudes and actions, we allow the Holy Spirit’s ministry to become grieved and even quenched, leaving us powerless and restless. (K. W. Osbeck, Amazing grace) As my mind travels across America, pondering the many visits to hither and yon, I have experienced of late a certain din that seems to permeate our land.  At first I thought it was the tinnitus whirring in my ears.  But it was not a presence I heard but alas an absence.  When Tocqueville travelled our land, he noticed something right away.  He could not put his finger on it at first, so he investigated until his curiosity was soothed with its finding.  It was the zest that springs forth eternal from the wellspring of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  It was the song of liberty sung by a soul set free echoing from sea to shining sea.  I cannot hear this song today.  It has been replaced with something I cannot describe.  I see it in the eyes of those I meet and hear it in their tone.  But when challenged to paint a portrait of its features, it runs away illusive.  Where is the fire that sets pulpits aflame with righteousness?  Where is the passion for the lost?  Where is the love of neighbor that lets them see Jesus high and lifted up?  Where is the Shekinah that dulls the noonday sun?  Have we not pushed the Word of God out of our lives?  Have not the many denominations thrown the Bible through the front door the church and into the street and then prayed for power?  The washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit comes when we are kneeling in the presence of the Holy Writ.  If we are not humbly and prayerfully committed to the Word, then the washing of degeneration from our reprobate minds will lead us to believe that we are something when we are really nothing! The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other; and with them this conviction does not spring from that barren traditionary faith which seems to vegetate in the soul rather than to live.  (Alexis de Tocqueville (The Republic of the United States of America and Its Political Institutions, Reviewed and Examined, Henry Reeves, (Garden City, NY: A. S. Barnes & Co., 1851), Vol. I, p. 335.) In view of the great importance of the ark, one had naturally supposed that the loss of it would have made the deepest possible impression on Israel, that they had made the most desperate efforts to recover it from the Philistines; or that they had unitedly humbled themselves before the Lord and with fastings and prayers besought Him to intervene and remove the grievous dishonor cast upon His name.  But apart from the grief of Eli and his daughter-in-law, there is no hint of any perturbation in the Nation. They appear to have been stolidly indifferent.  And has not the same grievous lack of zeal and concern for God’s glory characterized Christendom?  When British and American professors echoed the infidelity of the German theologians, when almost every cardinal doctrine of the Christian faith was denied by the very men who had taken solemn ordination vows to defend it, was not their wicked perversion of the Divine Testimony met, generally, with callous apathy!  How none of the churches followed Spurgeon’s example when he withdrew from the corrupt system.  And though here and there an individual protested and walked out, the majority complacently tolerated or approved. (Arthur W. Pink) The nation of Israel quickly decayed after a new generation took over, a generation that knew neither Joshua nor Joshua’s God.  “And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that He did for Israel...and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which He had done for Israel” (Jdg. 2:7, 10; and see Josh. 24:31).  Instead of exhibiting spiritual fervor, Israel sank into apathy; instead of obeying the Lord, the people moved into apostasy; and instead of the nation enjoying law and order, the land was filled with anarchy.  Indeed, for Israel it was the worst of times. (W. W. Wiersbe, Be available) A young Levite named Jonathan (18:30)1 had been living in Bethlehem of Judah, which was not one of the cities assigned to the priests and Levites (Josh. 21; Num. 35).  He was probably there because the people of Israel weren’t supporting the tabernacle and its ministry with their tithes and offerings as God commanded them to do (Num. 18:21–32; Deut. 14:28–29; 26:12–15).  Why live in one of the levitical cities if you’re going to starve?  When God’s people grow indifferent to spiritual things, one of the first evidences of their apathy is a decline in their giving to the work of the Lord; as a result, everybody suffers. When the Lord complains that He is not being honored by His people, they bluntly deny His charge despite clear evidence that the priests are indifferent and worse than careless in performing their ministry (Malachi: 1:6–14).  God sternly rebukes His priests, whose apathy and distorted teaching have corrupted the nation (2:1–9).  But God has a dispute with the people too.  Their marriages to foreign wives and their quickie divorces, motivated by passion, reflect their disloyal character (vv. 10–16).  It’s because they are a people who break faith, with one another and with God, that the Lord no longer hears or answers their prayers. (L. O. Richards, The Bible readers companion) Will there be lapses of devotion and faithfulness in the case of genuine disciples?  Yes.  All the virgins awaiting the bridegroom’s coming fell asleep.  In the next chapter Matthew showed readers that despite Jesus’ exhortations to vigilance (in this case, in prayer) disciples may fail (the same word, gregoreō, “keep watch,” used in 24:42–43 and 25:13, is also in 26:38, 40–41).  Matthew did not recount the disciples’ failure to pray in Gethsemane to provide fodder for excuses, but to show how necessary is divine enablement if frail disciples are to remain faithful, and how hurtful to Jesus their apathy and indifference can be. I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to Himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ. (Galatians 1:6-7 NLT) I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are following a different gospel — not that there really is another gospel, but there are some who are disturbing you and wanting to distort the gospel of Christ. (Galatians 1:6-7 NET.) I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. (Galatians 1:6-7 NASB) I marvel that ye are so quickly removing from him that called you in the grace of Christ unto a different gospel; which is not another gospel only there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. (Galatians 1:6-7 ASV) The reason we suffer under the effects of another gospel is that we have made a volitional choice to exit the "highway of holiness" via the interchange in order to travel on a counterfeit roadway instead! Between the corruption that lives in our own heart that exerts itself in a false wisdom and the deception of the enemy we essentially beat ourselves to the draw. We insist that we are still traveling upon the bright path because we cannot discern that the light we see is really darkness (Matthew 6, Luke 11). When our most ardent prayer is the one we say before we eat, and the inattentive listening of the weekly sermon at Sunday worship is our only meal in the Word it is no wonder that sin abounds more within the church than without. A quick sojourn in the third chapter of the Revelation will drive the point home when we see the Lord of Glory knocking on the door of the church asking to come in! Yet be encouraged! He is knocking! If only we would open the door! We would find something more precious than life itself, relationship with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Ye are so quickly removing (houtōs tacheōs metatithesthe). The present middle indicative of metatithēmi, to change places, to transfer. “You are transferring yourselves” and doing it “so quickly” either from the time of their conversion or most likely from the time when the Judaizers came and tempted them. So easily some of them are falling victims to these perverters of the gospel. That is a continuous amazement (thaumazō) to Paul and to men today that so many are so silly and so gullible to modern as to ancient charlatans. (A. T. Robertson) Public Domain Learn hence, that men, professedly pious, and apparently ardently attached to the gospel, may become soon perverted in their views, and alienated from those who had called them into the gospel, and whom they professed tenderly to love. The ardor of the affections becomes cool, and some artful, and zealous, and plausible teachers of error seduce the mind, corrupt the heart, and alienate the affections. Where there is the ardor of the first love to God, there is also an effort soon made by the adversary, to turn away the heart from him; and young converts are commonly soon attacked in some plausible manner, and by art and arguments adapted to turn away their minds from the truth, and to alienate the affections from God. (Dr. Albert Barnes) Public Domain Their sin and folly were that they did not hold fast the doctrine of Christianity as it had been preached to them, but suffered themselves to be removed from the purity and simplicity of it. (Matthew Henry) Public Domain

There are a great many in this world who possess a faith which is so similar to a genuine saving faith that they themselves are deceived.  Those around them may also consider this faith genuine even those who may have the gift of discernment. There was a man named Simon Magus. "Then Simon himself believed and was baptized.  He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed." (Acts 8:13 NLT). His faith expressed itself in such a way that is was mistaken by Philip who considered him to be a Christian.   But subsequently the Apostle Peter said: "You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with God… for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin." (Acts 8:21, 23 NLT). Arthur W. Pink, Practical Christianity (Public Domain) (paraphrase mine) We forget that we are the proud owners of a reprobate mind (Romans 1).  We are fully capable of creating a false salvation in the power of the flesh.  But the truth remains that our righteousness is but filthy rags.  We have lost our ability to do anything that pleases the Lord except that which is done by faith.  So faith is the organ that the Lord must grow in our bosom until the innermost man is strong and the outer man is weak. We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind. In Bible Study
As we begin the study of God’s Word, we must learn the significance of the Word’s presence throughout the universe.  In the beginning the Creator spoke everything into existence.  The Apostle John brings this to light in the first verses of his Gospel. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, ESV) So, we begin to see the written Word describing the Living Word! The Apostle Paul tells us that the invisible attributes of God can be perceived by observing creation. “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19–20, ESV) In the Epistle to the Hebrews the Word is described first as an “it” that is living, active, sharp, piercing, and discerning.  Then in contrast the Word is described as a Him to Whom we must give an account. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12–13, ESV) In the original language verse 12 begins with the words “logos Theos.”  Verse 13 ends with the word logos.”  A more literal expression would be that we are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him Whom to us is our Word.  The living Word.  The Lord Jesus Christ Himself. The long way round to say that we must never lose sight of the Whom that we are studying! May the Lord Himself bless you endeavors in the study of the Bible.

In Liberty
Liberty or license?  This is the question of our day.  When the rest of the world is finding new ways of practicing hedonism and self-indulgence (neither of which is a new thing) what prevents the church from impacting the same lost persons with the Good News?  The freemen of His cross have become bond slaves of their own license!  The breastplate of righteousness is made of Christ Himself!  Is there any room then for unrighteousness in the person of the wearer?  Absolutely not!  That is why it is called "the narrow way!"  We must "deny ourselves" and take up the cross daily.  Personal purity brings holiness (we are what we eat).  Why do you think the Apostle Paul talks about "putting off the old self"?  Before we can put on God's armor, we must first take off our own! "Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from Him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.  Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes."  (Ephesians 4:21-23 NLT) The word liberty brings with it the idea that we are delivered from something.  In this sense we are delivered from the bondage of our own deception! Arthur W Pink, in Practical Christianity says: "Again, many are never saved because they wish to divide Christ; they want to take Him as Savior, but are unwilling to subject themselves unto Him as their Lord.  Or if they are prepared to own Him as Lord, it is not as an absolute Lord.  But this cannot be: Christ will either be Lord of all or He will not be Lord at all.  But the vast majority of professing Christians would have Christ’s sovereignty limited at certain points; it must not encroach too far upon the liberty which some worldly lust or carnal interest demands.  His peace they covet, but His “yoke” is unwelcome.  Of all such Christ will yet say, 'But these Mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before Me' (Luke 19:27)." Liberty in Christ has brought forth in this land a great nation that was conceived in this selfsame liberty vouchsafed in the providence of His Name.  These liberties are not and cannot be mutually exclusive of each other for they are authored by the same sovereign Lord!  Edmund Burke said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."  I would say that as a whole, the Body of Christ is doing nothing with great zeal and makes no headway against evil because liberty has turned to license!  We have and are rebelling against the very "Spirit of Truth" that sealed our salvation and instead we follow the ministrations of our own fallen will not seeing that we have become the enemy and will soon be brought "hither, and slay them before me." "The evidence which he presents makes it unmistakably clear that early American citizens and statesmen knew what Romans 13 and the Bible as a whole make so clear: that civil government is not neutral among religions and philosophies of men but instead is a ministry of the sovereign God who created and rules His universe and world, and works out His eternal plan and holy will in history. Our forefathers in the faith did not retreat from involvement in society and politics. They did not turn civil government, the making, enforcement, and adjudication of laws, over to Satan and those who serve him. They did not surrender the ministry of civil government to those who are in rebellion against God. Instead, they sought to base civil government and law upon the truth.  They understood that God is the Lord of history who rules the lives of nations by His divine providence, and that He is in authority over our nation as well over all others. They knew that our nation’s civil government and law must be based upon God’s laws and principles of justice if we are to enjoy His blessings upon our land and people.  They comprehended that all men are sinners, and that man’s sinful nature has particularly destructive consequences when it is allowed to vent itself through the power of civil government. They understood that true religion (Christianity), virtue, and liberty are inseparably united, and that liberty cannot long be preserved in the absence of virtue among the people and their representatives." (The Christian Life and Character of the Civil Institutions of the United States, Benjamin F. Morris) True Spiritual Liberty by William Penn True spiritual Liberty is one of the most glorious things in the World, but it is little under stood and frequently abused by many.  I beseech Almighty God to preserve you, His people, in the right knowledge and use of the liberty, which Jesus Christ is redeeming us into. Christ's liberty is obtained through Christ's cross.  They that would be his freemen must be his bondsmen and wear his yoke.  His liberty is from sin, not to sin; to do his will and not our own.  This is the freedom that comes by Jesus Christ, to as many as receive him in the way which God hath given him, to wit, to save us from our corruptions, and guide us in the narrow way of his holy cross, and through the straight gate of self denial.  As many as have entered at this door are come to have unity with God and with one another.  "The church that dwells in God, if she dwells in God, then in love."  Consequently her members are of one mind in church matters since she has but one head to rule her. True spiritual liberty is deliverance from sin.  "If the truth makes you free then are you free indeed," saith Christ.  The liberty of God's people stands in the Truth, and their communion in it, in the perfect spiritual law of Jesus Christ, which delivers and preserves them from every evil thing. False spiritual liberty is departing from this blessed spirit of truth, and rebelling against the perfect law of liberty in the heart, and being at liberty to do our own wills.
