Harness The Good, Release The Bad

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things."  Philippians 4:8

Years ago there was a television comedy sketch where a comedian played a psychologist and his phrase he kept repeating was “harness the good, release the bad” and even though this was done in humor there is much truth to it.

Dwelling on junk that drags you down will drag you further down. This is a tactic of the enemy as he knows how to push our buttons on weak areas in our life. For instance, trying to get people to like you who have no interest is futile, and continuing to hound them and beg them sends them further away. Instead cherish friends who really like and care for you and don’t try to figure out why the others one don’t. It is a waste of time.

Release those things in your life that are not bringing you closer to Jesus. If something is causing you constant stress and turmoil it is obviously not of God. Pray and ask God to handle it.

PRAYER: Lord I thank you for helping me break strongholds that keep my mind occupied on areas that take me away from you. Help me let go of hurtful things and embrace the good things in life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Running Off At The Mouth

Running Off At The Mouth

Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.  Psalm 141:3

Does your mouth get you in trouble? Most people could honestly say yes or at least there have probably been times when you say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Perhaps you hurt someone and never asked for forgiveness. Maybe you lied about something? Gossiped?  The tongue indeed can cause lots of trouble if not kept in check.

Once something is said it is out there. It could be recorded to haunt you later or in form of a letter, text,  or email. The main thing to remember is to ask God to help you if this is a weak area. Your mom may have told you at one time "If you can't  say something good don't say it at all" and indeed how true that statement is.  James chapter three in the New Testament talks about no man being able to control the tongue. Oh if you and I could just think before we communicate.

Let your yes be yes and your words and thoughts  stay positive. You need right thinking and right thinking is developed by a steady diet of God's word. So what do you say...only good things I hope!

PRAYER:  Lord I thank you for your forgiveness and grace cause when I mess up with my mouth I am feeling horrible and I need your help to stay on track. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Post Dramatic Stress Syndrome (PDSD)

Post Dramatic Stress Syndrome(PDSD)

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

Life in general can create allot of drama. No one really has to hold the title of drama king or queen for this to occur. Stuff just happens and sometimes the human reaction is just to sigh and throw up your hands. After this occurs a good case of PDSD may occur.

Perhaps things happen in your life and seem to barrel out of control. You feel overwhelmed, exasperated, frustrated, and just want normality to return. When you get this way the best thing to do is stop what you are doing. Regroup. Pray. Relax. Now do that same sequence over. Take a breath. This too shall pass.

Give your worries to God. Give your relationship issues to God. Give your heart and life to God.

PRAYER:  I am thankful I do not have to allow frustrations to define me. I am thankful I can go to call out to God at any time. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Your 'Job' Friends

Your 'Job' Friends

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.  Proverbs 18:24

You may recall in the book of Job in the New Testament, Job was greatly tested to see his allegiance to God. If you have never read this account take some time and read this book. In Job 19:19 it says "All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me."

I have 'been there, done that, got the tee shirt' as the saying goes and it is not fun. It is very confusing particularly when you are clueless as to what brought it on. Indeed you do learn from bad situations in your life although they are devastating to endure.

If you have been shut out by a close friend first and foremost pray for this person. You may be angry, and confused. Think about Jesus when he was betrayed. How He must have hurt. Cling to God and He will get you through these times.

PRAYER:  Lord I can't control other people and what they do but I can pray. Help me never be hateful when I am rejected but to remain steadfast in prayer. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Rough Patch? Get the Sandpaper!

Rough Patch?  Get The Sandpaper.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  James 1:2-3

No ones life is immune from trouble of some sort.  As much as you may not like to hear this, troubles actually make you stronger in the long run if you don't cave in to the enemy wanting you to get angry at God.

You are sort of being sanded or transformed into what God wants you to be.  Sandpaper is not a fun thing to rub on your skin and I don't recommend it but you get the idea?  A carpenter needs to sand wood to have a nice finished product that people will not end up getting splinters.  So too our Heavenly Father 'sands'  His creation.  Us!

I realize many of these trials are the unimaginable kind but lean in on God and He can and will see you through.

PRAYER:  Lord Jesus when I look back on the rough patches of my life I can see how you worked in me.  I pray for those people going through being sanded now that you will transform their lives in a positive way.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.

Greener Grass Desired?

Greener Grass Desired?  Get a Lawnmower!

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said:

"Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."  Hebrews 13:5

Comparison is so bad. Your eyes wander and TV commercials tell you what they think you need to be happier, more fulfilled, younger, leaner, successful and on it goes.  The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence and if it is you probably need a new lawnmower to take care of it.

I fall into this trap sometimes when I am out writing in coffee shops.  I see some professional woman sitting at a table interviewing someone and think "I could do that".  It is the enemy who makes us discontent with what we currently have.

Do you have a roof over your head?  Food on the table?  Fresh running water?  Clothes on your back?  A vehicle to drive?  Friends?  I would say those basic needs are pretty well met by a majority living in America.  When you start looking around at mansions, fancy cars, job titles you don't know in fact where those people's hearts are at or if in fact their life really is happy.  So beware. Don't let the enemy make you jealous as that is not a fruit of the spirit and will rot on the vine.

PRAYER: I love you Lord and I thank you for just where I am in life and the material things you have blessed me with.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.



Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

No matter what you do there may be a time in your life when you were overlooked for something.  A promotion, a pay raise, acceptance in a school or program, a scholarship, an election, a part in a school play.

Just remember, to God you are not second best or the runner up.  You are the best no matter what the world is throwing at you.  Your feelings may be hurt by something right now.  You have heard the phrase "when God closes a door He opens a window" and often times things we perceive as bad at the time they occur in the long run do us a tremendous favor. 

So whatever it is you may be facing or waiting on or even dealing with, relax and trust God to direct your paths.

PRAYER: Often when we get left out, overlooked, laid off, or worse it can hurt bad. Help me trust you with all the details of my life and help me to not say or do anything rash but to relax and wait on your timing.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.

Note: in light of the Oscar Best Picture blunder the cast of La La Land has to feel a bit overlooked as well.  I wrote this devotion a week ago.

Famine Ahead!

Famine Ahead!

“Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord God, ‘When I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall turn to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.’”  Amos 8:11-12

Can you imagine if here in these United States originally founded using the Bible as the guide to even write laws, that there will come a time when the best selling book of all time, the Bible, could not be found anywhere, I mean anywhere?  Many scoff at this notion saying, "Becky that is not possible" but I say to turn off the secular news and tune in to things happening with Christians worldwide you never hear about on the three major networks.  Christian persecution is happening.  Even on some university campuses Christian Bible studies are not welcome.

There in fact may come a time according to this verse for today, when you will be starving for the word of God.  Now for people who don't even read it except on Sunday that will not be a loss, but to you who do love studying God's word you need to be hiding it in your heart so you will have it to rely on in troubled times ahead.  Imagine really starving for food which most reading this never have done.  Hunger yes, starvation no.  Literally starving I mean.  Imagine no Bibles anywhere.

Store up God's word in your heart.  Treasure it as if it were gold.  Many nations do not allow the Bible now.  Several years ago my husband travelled to the Middle East and hid his Bible in his suitcase.  Don't take God's word for granted.  Read it daily.

PRAYER:  I am so grateful to have a Bible, and many people have several.  Help me to treasure it above all else and use it daily.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.

Words. They Matter!

Words.  They Matter!

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.  Colossians 4:6

These past few months with political debates, television  adds many people have become so angry.  I have seen professing Christians just going ballistic on Facebook pages spewing unseemly words about one candidate or another.  Are we really justified in being so ugly?  The answer of course is no.

The enemy is having a hey day with the actions of many.  The issue is we as believers need to stop judging, mind our own business, and pray.  Stop spewing hate ourselves.

This was the most important election of our lifetime.  One of the biggest issues is the three Supreme Court justices that will be put into play by whoever is elected.  Everyone seemed too angry to remember that factor.  The election is over.  I urge all of you reading this to take time each day to pray that the transition will be completed peacefully.  If you are beside yourself with anger, turn on some Christian praise music to soothe your soul.

 PRAYER:  Dear Lord I am thankful for being born in a democracy.  Many in other nations probably laugh at us.  Help my brothers and sisters in Christ trust that you have a plan and help all of us know that once words are spoken they can't be taken back.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.

Mind Altering

Mind Altering

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

There are things that can make a person's mind be altered in ways not from God.  Examples would be alcohol and drugs.  You hear of people who can't relax or want to have fun so they drink.  Maybe there are those with problems they feel a magic drug or alcohol will help cure.  Deaths have occurred from mixing drugs and alcohol.

The best and most preferred way to 'alter your mind' is not with substances mentioned above but from reading God's word.  The Bible helps transform your thoughts and help you acquire peace and joy instead of fear and unhappiness.  It is also your guidebook through life to keep you on the right path.

When you feel upset, fearful, angry, bitter, forgotten, abused, unloved pick up the Bible, for in it you will find rest for your weary soul.  Give it a try.

PRAYER:  Lord I know that only through you are problems solved not by drinking or taking drugs.  I pray for those caught in that trap, often one of fear and unhappiness.  I need you every hour.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
