They were God's chosen people; they had had a unique place in God's purposes; and yet when God's Son had come into the world they had rejected him and crucified him. How is this tragic paradox to be explained? (William Barclay)
And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. (Romans 9:26 KJV)
"AND IT SHALL BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, 'YOU ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,' THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS OF THE LIVING GOD." (Romans 9:26 NASB)

"And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' there they will be called 'sons of the living God.' " (Romans 9:26 NET.)
And, "Then, at the place where they were told, 'You are not My people,' there they will be called 'children of the living God.'" (Romans 9:26 NLT)

I suppose that I could wax eloquent (translated "wax an elephant") with this verse, or even try to dig deep to find a hidden truth.  But the most stark of realizations cries out to be heard.  God divorced Israel! But at the very geographical position, they will be reunited with Him and be called the "sons of the living God."  How infinite the attention to detail that forgiveness and reconciliation would occur on the exact spot where there was division!  It is also a harsh truth that of all the professors enumerated in Hosea's prophesy only a few will be saved!  This truth stands ready for us today!  Do you really belong to Jesus?  Or have you been deceived by shiny beads and shallow flattery?  Is Jesus your vocation or avocation?  Is He your everything or just your hobby?

They were God's chosen people; they had had a unique place in God's purposes; and yet when God's Son had come into the world they had rejected him and crucified him. How is this tragic paradox to be explained? (William Barclay)
"I will call them my people which are not a people."  This is said with respect to the divorce, which God had already made with the people, by depriving them of all honor, so that they did not excel other nations. (John Calvin)
The rejecting of the Jews, and the taking in the Gentiles, were foretold in the Old Testament.  It tends very much to the clearing of a truth, to observe how the Scripture is fulfilled in it.  It is a wonder of Divine power and mercy that there are any saved: for even those left to be a seed, if God had dealt with them according to their sins, had perished with the rest.  This great truth this Scripture teaches us.  Even among the vast number of professing Christians it is to be feared that only a remnant will be saved. (Matthew Henry)

Re: Romans 9:26 - The Same Spot

You are correct; God is mercyful and we cannot understand his wisdom, however we can see little bits of His plan. God has not divorce Israel because He is a God of covenants. He is not a man who should lie and his word is true and Amen. For this very reason it would be wise to remember Romans 11:25.

Romans 11:25 For, brothers, I want you to understand this truth which God formerly concealed but has now revealed, so that you won’t imagine you know more than you actually do. It is that stoniness, to a degree has come upon Israel, until the Gentile world enters in its fullness; (26) and that its is in this way that all Israel will be saved. As the Tanakh says,”Out of Tziyon will come the Redeemer; he will turn away ungodliness from yakov and this will be my covenant with them,… when I take away their sins.”

Isaiah 59:20-21 “Then a Redeemer will come to Tziyon, to these in Yakov whom turn from rebellion.” So says Adonai.
