The word ‘meek’ usually refers to those who are patient in the reception of injuries, but the Hebrew word used here (ענוים ‛ănâviym) means properly the oppressed, the afflicted, the unhappy. It involves usually the idea of humility or “virtuous suffering”. Here it may denote the pious of the land who were oppressed, and subjected to trials. (Dr. Albert Barnes)
The humble will be filled with fresh joy from the LORD. The poor will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 29:19 NLT)
One cannot fathom this kind of joy until the Lord brings it to fruition in the reality of our daily lives. Two of the sweetest believers I know are walking through such a trial. A devoted husband is encouraging his wife who has just suffered the loss of a limb to cancer. Yet it is the staff of the ICU that has been encouraged. For in this couple the light of Christ shines.
We live in a tough old world that owes us nothing. To the contrary the principalities and powers in heavenly places seek to do us much harm. Yet there is a joy that comes from knowing Christ that gives all that is required and more to face each day. It is not a learned joy but one that is fresh each moment given as a gift from a loving Savior to his bride.
I face an unknown in my own life this morning. The waiting and wondering can often cloud thoughts that ought to be centered on the Savior. Somehow the Grace that saves also give illumination to the Word and the Word lifts the soul and spirit to fly on eagles wings and assuage even the weariest of hearts.
