Gideon was one of those ordinary people chosen for an extraordinary task. The Angel of the Lord found him hiding in a winepress threshing wheat (instead of the usual threshing floor) because the dreaded Midianites were pounding the Israelites on a pretty regular basis. Even after the Lord called him a 'valiant warrior' it took a 'confidence target' (demolishing a pagan altar), significant reinforcements from some of the tribes of Israel, and laying down two fleeces to test God before Gideon mustered up enough 'valiantness' to tackle the main mission - saving Israel from the Midianites and their allies, the Amalakites.

Then, just when Gideon was about ready to charge the enemy camp, God whittled down Gideon's forces from around 30,000 to 300 by having him send all the cowards home and then having the remaining 10,000 take a drink in the lake. The men who lapped the water in the lake with their tongues, like a dog drinks, (300) were separated from those who knelt down to take a drink (the other 9,700). Gideon got the 300, who weren't necessarily as valiant as most sermons on the subject make them out to be. Dogs, you see, were a despised breed of animal back then.

The rest is history. Gideon and his band of 300, by following the Lord's battle plan, not only rousted the Midianites and Amalekites that were camped in the valley of Jezreel, but they went on to victory over several other groups of Midianites living in Israel at the time. A more detailed record of Gideon's exploits can be found in Judges 6-8. I encourage you to read it.

There are of course other records of ordinary folks accomplishing amazing things for God throughout the Bible, most notable to this author being the small band of disciples in the New Testament, which included fishermen, a tax collector and a political activist!

Here's the point, my friend. If you are reading this and consider yourself to be just one of the millions of ordinary folks inhabiting Christendom, take heart and be encouraged. If you're available, chances are pretty good (if not certain) that God will chose you for a few extraordinary tasks as you walk along the road of life!

In His Service and Yours,
